Ed Perkins on Travel: New credit cards simulate consumer push-back

The 3 newest consumer credit cards — dual from Bank of America, one a Fairmont label from JPMorgan Chase — simulate consumer annoyance with airline mileage cards. All 3 have some advantages.

  • The Bank of America Travel Rewards label offers 1.5 points, with an homogeneous 1.5-cent money value, for each $1 charged to a card. (Most cards offer around 1 cent per dollar.) The label carries no annual fee.

  • The BankAmericard Privileges credit label with Travel Rewards offers dual points per dollar charged. This label carries an annual cost of $7, waived for some BofA customers.

Both cards offer no-surcharge on unfamiliar transactions, a underline that many of we have come to favor. They also embody these features: no extent on a sum series of points earned; no death on points; 24-hour transport and puncture assistance; automobile let collision repairs coverage; transport collision insurance; and mislaid container reimbursement.

As with identical cash-value cards, regulating your points for atmosphere transport is easy. Just buy a sheet with a credit card; afterwards record onto your comment site to use points for all or partial of a squeeze price. When we indeed buy a ticket, we equivocate a trance dates and chair stipulations that totter we when we try to use airline miles.

  • The new Fairmont Visa Signature Card, from JPMorgan Chase, also offers no-fee unfamiliar transactions. Reward advantages are strong with Fairmont hotels, including discounts and giveaway nights, and a common list of extras.

Both banks are responding to apparent consumer restlessness with airline frequent-flier miles. Sure, removing a mile in an airline module for each dollar we spend sounds great, though wait until we try to find a chair for 25,000 or so miles. Also, many of we resent a standard 3 percent bank cost for estimate a unfamiliar transaction when a bank unequivocally performs no specific duty in a banking acclimatisation process.

What’s blank from a new cards? There’s still no chip-and-pin capability to promote their use overseas. we keep seeking a banking folks why, and they keep fobbing me behind with possibly nonsense excuses or a “we’ll keep we posted” promise.

As I’ve been saying, unless we acquire a lot of airline miles by drifting a lot — and benefit a desired chosen levels — you’re still improved off with a credit label that gives we money or cash-equivalent rewards rather than miles. The difference is if we cite to use miles for premium-class transport or upgrades. Cash homogeneous doesn’t work there. Cash sheet prices are distant too high; we competence as good only try to find a occasional accessible frequent-flier seats. But if we fly in economy, hang with a high-payback cards, including a new BofA cards, Capital One cards and a few others.
